How many sparrows can there be near my feeder?!?

My bird feeders have been overrun by house sparrows, and I do mean overrun. I've shot 9 of them with my BB gun, but there just seem to be an endless supply of these birds. What are the numbers nearby? Are they flying from remote locations or nearby? I have thousands of BBS but would like to know that this is not a Sisyphean task.
